Unlike
breast cancer, which can be detected early due to the availability of a
screening test which has helped to increase 5 year survival rates to well over
80%1,2 , no reliable early population screening test for ovarian
cancer is currently available.
About
80% of all new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed in women 50 years and
older1 and fewer than 20% of women with ovarian cancer are diagnosed
in the early stages of the disease2, resulting in 5 year survival
rates of 40 – 46%1,2.
However,
if ovarian cancer is diagnosed early (before the cancer has spread), the 5 year
survival rate increases to over 93%2, thus the priority for better
patient outcome is undoubtedly improving early detection.
